Retrospective 4


Meanwhile, back in Bacteria Salisbury Gardens, the Big Potato Competition was being held, Suzy in charge of the weighing - and you will of course remember who won? Roger sent me the photos.


So nice to see my lovely friends/former neighbours; this year, the adjoining street took part. Perhaps over the coming years, the event will grow, and become the Jesmond Vale Tatie Olympiad.....


But in the cottage, signs of home were beginning to emerge. Still many (too many!) boxes, lamps, pictures and books to unpack, and far too much furniture. Some will have to go, as I just don't have the space here, but at last, there's somewhere to sit down and have a cup of tea. Momentarily.



And now, with the Lovely Son taken to the station 23 miles away early this morning, and the rain teeming down just in time for the freecycled cardboard boxes to be taken away in the next few minutes, I'm on my own in my chaotic, over-stuffed, heap-infested cottage. At least it feels like I'm on my own; the cats and dogs are asleep, and all I can hear is the rain. Bliss....

I have nothing to do but to plod away over the coming weeks, sorting out those heaps, organising my ludicrous amount of stuff, to make it all orderly and homely. I have a wood burner to buy, and a new name plate for the cottage's front door, as well as odd jobs to get done in time for the winter.

A project or two in the planning stages; just what I like!

    Alone, indoors in your new nest with the sound of rain and sleeping animals about is indeed bliss.

    You've done it! You've moved house!
    I'm listening to the sound of rain too - and hoping our visitors aren't thinking it was a mistake to come on holiday here!

    Rachel, I'm so glad you're settling into this lovely cottage with your happy animals.
    From your pictures, I'm pretty sure I've walked down your street while staying at a place in the woods above. It's good. Very good.

    Its always good to sit down with the cup of tea :) Complete with rain. I'm not sure why but rain always reminds me of library night with my father when I was very young.

    Looking good - it makes a difference to have a little oasis of calm in the midst of the mayhem, where you can sit and relax in the evenings. You will have to start stitching some hexagons or knitting socks - you can't live in a cottage and not indulge in old-fashioned crafty stuff!!

    You're making good progress. Your new home looks very welcoming even if there are still many, many boxes to unpack. Your new neighbours sound lovely and it's so nice that Flossie has a young Labrador friend.

    No wonder you and the cats are happy - it's looking just like home, but in a cottage with garden, near wonderful walking country, in a warmer (if wetter!) part of the world. And new friends already!

    I think you've already achieved SO much - your room looks really homely even though there's still more to do. You have the right idea to plod along at your own pace - no need to kill yourself sorting stuff out!

    I'm going to say after all the physical work you're putting in tackling that wall of cardboard - you should go ahead and tackle a few slices of that delicious looking cake. I would like a piece as well please, after I come back from The Brittania for lunch and a pint or two! What a beautiful place.. I'm so happy for you!

    So settled so soon. And with Bacteria Gardens still in full mourning. And has there been a backward glance by Flossie I wonder? Or by the much-missed Tosca and the wide-eyed morning visitor, Lottie? By any of the household . . ? I suspect not . . . Be happy all xxxxxxx
