A welcome phone call this morning from the Lovely Son, made from one of these phone booths:
From inside Saigon Central Post Office, built by Gustave Eiffel. 'Uncle Ho' looks down, perhaps benevolently.
The LS and his travelling companion (girlfriend? not girlfriend? I don't ask) are having a great time, and thousands of photos are promised.
Not all is rosy, however; there was a harrowing visit to the War Remnants (formerly War Crimes) Museum, lots of rain, and some angst over a dish of something that didn't quite taste of rabbit, and is now being fretted over in case it was dog. The Lovely Son, an adventurous carnivore, loves dogs, but not in his dinner....
I shan't tell Tosca that bit.
Me, I'm having a less adventurous day, sleeping, slobbing about in dressing gown till disgracefully late, and reading this Hanoi blog, kindly sent to me by Jill who doesn't have a blog of her own. I love a bit of vicarious travel; no need for typhoid jabs or malaria tablets, or stepping out into terrifyingly chaotic traffic.
But I still wish I could be there...
I'll have salad for lunch, thank you; I may share it with the dog.

Considering how we Americans left the country in such a ruined state back in 1975, the recovery has certainly been astonishing, hasn't it?
I'd love to go there, typhoid shots and malaria pills notwithstanding.
It's hard work being a Mum! Stuart came out to Majorca in May to join us for the second week of our holiday, and despite the fact that he a) is 31 and b) travelled to Indonesia and Singapore to visit us when we lived there when he was 20, I still fretted until I saw him walk into the arrivals hall!!
Think I prefer to stay in Canada..... I'm just not that big a traveller at the best of times...never mind to certain geographic locations...
.... I like my own bed and my own kitchen.....
I remember phoning home from a booth very similar to that years ago. Just can't remember where we were at the time...maybe Athens.
A fabulous trip ! I do envy them every minute of it .
P.S. Might not have been dog . I don't know how to put this , really ..... but it could have been cat . Don't suppose that will be any consolation so I shouldn't mention the possibility to them .
Or to Hamish .
This might seem strange, but all the motorbikes zooming around reminds me of Italy.
Oh my God! That traffic!...and wouldn't like to think too much about what son and companion ate. I attended a Fillipino christening recently here in Australia, with many newly arrived residents from the Phillipines, seriously extolling the virtues of eating dog, back in the Phillipines and how delicious it was.My Aussie workmates in attendance were horrified, but being guests, kept quiet, and returned to the pig on the spit, quite grateful that it was what was on offer on the rotisserie!
sounds fascinating
Sometimes vicarious travelling is the best kind! We had DREADFUL weather driving back home from Wales. I was white-knuckling it; got a terrible cramp in my hand from gripping the steering wheel so hard.
Your son seems very adventurous. Cautionary tale: My brother-in-law went travelling to Vietnam/Cambodia two years ago and never came back! He lives in a pink house not far Angkor Wat now.
