Those of you of a vengeful turn of mind can take the hat pins out of the wax effigy now. I have just received a long, explanatory and apologetic email from the ex-buyer of my house, forwarded by the estate agent.
He had originally been told that 7-year training places start off in Newcastle, and only heard on July 26th that he wouldn't be based here after all. He tried in vain to renegotiate his contract, he says, but was faced with buying a house that he would not be able to live in for three years, and withdrew his offer with reluctance.
Oh well, at least he wrote to explain. Let's forgive him, shall we?

Is it possible for you to share some of your 'nice gene'?
It does sound genuine, though, knowing what my doctor nephew has been through.
Oh, alright then. I'm sure he will be very sorry not to be buying your lovely house.
As you say at least he wrote to explain, a lot of people probably wouldn't have done. The next buyer will be along soon hopefully.
It sounds as though he may have been through the mill a bit too. He should have kept lines of communication open though.
Well hey, no point in being bitter... but as a future doctor, his attention to detail could be a lot better!!!

And I was going to have so much fun with that felting needle!! Still, a belated apology is better than none at all.
Yep. Pins withdrawn.
Got a wax effigy going begging now - any suggestions?
Yep, things go wrong to us all at some point, so I do think that the doctor was right to respect you by emailing. He obviously realised that the turmoil in his life was affecting you, and bothered enough to let you know.
I bet he is gutted that he is not moving into your beautiful home!
Oh , all right then ....
Yes, forgiven I think. Not that many people would have bothered to send the email to explain. Son is a junior doctor and would sympathise a bit with him I suspect!
Oh Rachel! I was away on vacation out of reach of wifi, and had no idea what was happening. I am so sorry to hear your news. Disappointment all around. It's his loss... your house is gorgeous.
Well if YOU can then I guess we can. But I was so looking forward to seeing more of that particular patch of Sommerset on my computer.
Hat pins have been put away and the doctor has been given the benefit of doubt.
Maybe the hat pins could be used for acupuncture to calm your frazzled nerve endings after the disappointment! :)
I'm in awe of your sang-froid--Id be frothing & fulminating. Not to mention pissed off
