Say me something

So here am I, all excited about the super-moon at which we may (or may not - it's quite cloudy here) be able to wonder, open-mouthed, tonight.

The Lovely Son rang, and after some delicate interrogation of his current situation re house, cat, girlfriend, work, money, and so on, in the way that mothers must, I told him all about this beautiful moon.

Yawn, yawn. He knows. Yes, he also knows that the huge rising moon we see on the horizon is an illusion. He doesn't know that the way to test this is by looking through a cardboard tube, the sort that goes inside a roll of kitchen towel, to prove that the seemingly-gigantic moon is actually the same size as it will be hours later, when we perceive it as much smaller, but does he care?

No. Collapse of stout party. I thought it was all very interesting and rather enthralling, anyway.

When the Lovely Son was a very little boy, he came indoors from the garden and told his grandma something - I forget what - that had clearly taken his fancy. She, for once, failed to respond as fully as he would have liked, giving a polite "Mmm-hmm" and he was outraged. "Well, SAY me somet'ing 'bout it!"

So, it's going to be a super-moon tonight, and although you really don't have to say me somet'ing 'bout it, I hope you'll be out there with your cardboard tube and your sense of wonder.

It's clouding over here too, but I'm not complaining. For once it has been sunny on a Saturday - the only day I am able to make demands on hubby's time - and he has repaird broken sides to my raised beds, weeded them, put home-made compost on. And I've been sowing seeds in the greenhouse like mad. It 'll be back to Welsh rain tomorrow!

Fingers firmly crossed as Jennifer is here, along with the younger sil Judith - so you might find us out in the garden later, clutching cameras (but as Malcolm has poured the wine with a heavy hand, we might all be snoring!!)

Ohhh yes, me and Professor Cox, gazing at the moon, together. Be still my beating heart! :o)

I love your blog! I, too, have been excited about seeing the moon, and got pretty much the same reaction from my mother as you got from your son yesterday when I told her to look at it this weekend. Some peole have no soul..... (I found a ladybird on my washing today, that was cool too)

Absolutely the most fabbiest moon what I have seen! HUGE, HUGE,HUGE and orange.

Quite scary in a 'something out there we don't quite understand' way.

Yes, was looking forward very much. All set to drag visitors (wine glass in hand. Of course) down the drive, clear of the palm jungle. And the rain returned.
Said rude word and poured more wine...

But I know a few bloggers who'll post great pics.

I would say you something but I need to wander outside and have a proper look first .
It does look very fine through the kitchen window , I must say , even without the help of a kitchen roll tube . It's not orange though ..... or is that only in Wales ?

Watched it rise huge and pink although the rest of the house does not share my excitement as more interested in the rugby!

Saw it (for once not lit by an orange city glow) and it was wonderful.

Clear sky now in Harpenden, and the moon is shining brightly...looks huge and very " round" through the bins.! I told my son about it this afternoon....he writes a blog " uknatureblog.com" and didn't seem to know anything about this unusual moon.....isn't it good to be able to tell your grown up kids something they don't know?

I am fascinated by the idea of the Super-Moon. Born in July, I am called a Moonchild.

Please remove this if you see fit, but re Sue's comment, Patrick Moore is single because his fiancee was killed by a bomb in WWII. In a TV programme years ago he said that he never wanted anyone else. I have always thought more of him because of this.

I forgot about it in all the excitement of hubby's news that he actually put some plasterboard up yesterday. I didn't know about the size illusion either!

Well, it's a bit late for me, since this is Sunday, but I'll have a bit of a look tonight just to convince myself I've missed it. That'll teach me not to read your blog...

As I was working 4pm to midnight last night, I was unable to actually see the perigee moon as it rose above the horizon (when it seemed the largest) but I did speak to several of the pilots about it on the radio, and they were excited about it too!

Well I'm thinking a poetic sense of awe at the moon would help him just as much as the bedlinen with girlfriend's affections.

I didn't know it was going to BE a super-moon (which is unusual for me) but I did notice that it was an unusually bright and beautiful one.

We had fog and snow, missed the whole damn thing.... aaargh!

I found out about the size illusion when I tried to photograph what seemed like a huge moon, last spring. A bit of a dis-illusion!

Last night`s moon was amazing here, and tonight it was still huge and bright. Still worth getting excited about!

My 6 year old son was SO disappointed that the sky was overcast and we couldn't see a thing. He'd been looking forward to it for a couple of weeks. I didn't know about the cardboard roll trick, we'll definitely do that this weekend if the clouds clear away.

it was very bright indeed though i caught it rather later than the 6:45 that you told me it would appear. plus family phone calls made it difficult to hang about in the street or dangle out of the upstairs windows :)
