the trouble with visitors

isn't them, not in any way. It's the constant planning, preparing and eating of regular meals, taken at a properly-set table, and the treats in between.

And that's not really the problem either. It's the constant creeping of calories, the overload of delicious little morsels and embellishments, the starters, the puddings, the cream-in-everything, the finishing of leftovers as an extra, because we wouldn't want waste, would we? It's the relentless migration of those calories to hips and tummy. The little inspired thought that pops up in the evening and drives us to the mocha ice cream in the freezer, because we wouldn't drink coffee so close to bedtime, but
coffee in home made ice cream? - no problem.

Tricia goes off to Yorkshire today, for the weekend. I may have to live on water and noble thoughts of self-restraint till her return, just to give my poor beleaguered innards a break.

Perhaps we should finish that ice cream before she leaves. After all, calories shared are calories halved, and noble thoughts of self-restraint might last longer in a kitchen without cream in any form.

But then there's the shopping for her return to think about....

Calories shared - now that thought could have come straight from Millie. I've told you before, about the butter, she's only trying to save you from yourself!

Finding out that I have coeliac has actually made me far less cautious about food - anything other than gluten is now OK, and over last winter I managed to put on 7lbs which have been VERY SLOW TO SHIFT. Baked goods have always left me cold, but realising that the wine-cooked pears and cream season is almost upon us has set my mind to thinking about what I can cut out to compensate. Life is so tough sometimes! (and yes, I do realise how lucky we are to have such problems!)

So true, Rachel. I am having guests this weekend, and have been preparing some treats. The problem is my diligence in tasting them to make sure they are up to par... I think I may be joining you in living on water and noble thoughts of self-restraint.

Wasn't it you who advised ... ""An ice cream a day keeps all badness away". I could have sworn it was you.

And homemade ice cream has, of course, extra special badness deflecting properties.

Eat standing up. that's the thing. Calories go straight down and out of the soles of your feet. Easy!

Ok, I think I might claim some supporters here, when I say to Marie - a fit, slim woman, by the look of her:

HA! YOU MUST BE JOKING!

(Anyway, it's too late.....)

Can't comment, other than to add I so admire your honesty about your atrocious eating habits... I shall follow your good example and own up to having just consumed four (the whole packet) of Real Lancashire Eccles Cakes containing real butter. I ate them because I'm stressed and all on my own. Plenty of excuses see, unlike some people...
