Weighty matters

Is this a first? At the GP surgery this morning, having my new-patient registration appointment with the nurse, I was weighed, and her scales weighed lighter than my snazzy new digital ones at home. And my blood pressure had reduced a little too. I shall choose to believe both.

From the sublime to the ridiculous. Shelagh in Toronto sent me pictures of her visit to the Canadian National Exhibition. The food hall was special.

Deep fried onion cut into a flower shape.

Deep fried colas.

and best of all..... the Donut Burger!

Looks like a bun, a doughnut, a burger, some cheese, and a heart attack.

Read here if you don't quite believe the photos.

Then go and weigh yourself. I bet you've put on a couple of pounds in the time it took to read and look and gasp and faint away laugh....

Good news on the weight and blood pressure issues.
The food made me feel ill!

Have you heard about this year's Ohio state fair's deep fried sensation - deep fried butter on a stick
I kid not ... xo les Gang

Actually, the doughnuts ARE the bun - top and bottom. I wish I could have taken a photo of someone eating one but although they were certainly buying them, I never saw anyone take a bite. Likely purchasing for "a friend"...
NO - I did NOT have one. In fact I could hardly bear to look. And Susan, we have the deep fried butter as well. Biggest seller of the fair last year. What a commentary.

Ugh. Gross!

I'm of the "you are what you eat" belief, and I completely fail to understand why anyone would want their bodies to absorb totally gross stuff like that You, on the other hand, are obviously doing something right, so it's official - living in the country is good for YOU. (Of course we believe the scales - it's nothing to do with the pull of the Equator now you are further South!!)

Good news about the lowering of weight and BP. Keep it up.

Hmm, not at all sure how one would fry cola, how do they do it?

There is a restaurant here that began serving fried ice cream. Personally, I try not to eat anything that's been fried. When I take my nieces to eat, I usually steal a few french fries, though.

I believe you all are missing what I think the majority of the people who go to fairs like this get - Every now and then it's totally ok to go "EWWWW, wait.. I have to nibble it." I just recently went to the Orange County fair here in Southern California and that was what 90% of the conversation around the absurd food carts was. People in my area of the U.S. are notoriously fit. We yoga, jog, kick-box, Zumba and eat salads dayun dayoud - but occasionally (once a year) we go to the fair and eat a deep fried twinkie.. You have to! Otherwise, why walk the planet?

Alicia, you should come here to Kentucky and visit a Walmart. You would not believe how many obese people there are walking around. I don't think they restrict these treats to once a year! You are lucky to live in such a health-conscious area. Too many restaurants here specialize in everything fried... I don't eat out much!

Makes a deep fried Mars bar seem positively healthy! Glad you got good news about the blood pressure - my doctor knows to make an allowance for my 'phobia' about getting my blood pressure taken (it's the sensation when the cuff tightens!!)

I really don't feel quite so bad about my pilchards on toast and a Mars Bar tea now.

See, only 4 weeks in the south, and healthier already. Must be the county air and all those lovely walks!

I like Veg Artist's comment. I'm much further north than you, hence the unpleasantness of what the scales say. Voila!

I think you might just have hit on a way to keep the pounds off. All of the stuff featured here is enough to turn the stomach. Deep-fried butter on a stick . . . I'm retching as I type

I've just eaten two Jaffa cakes because of the bl**dy weather and feel as though I have overindulged.
