I must say I'm with the joiner, I find the door looking very nice the way it is. (But of course I don't know how great it would look after you painted it!)
It's up to you of course. I've done my fair share of door stripping through layers of paint ancient and modern. I suspect the original residents would not have wanted anything as common as a pine door and would have scumbled it to look like oak - that's the treacly layer that's so difficult to remove. Please don't do that.
Also I've heard - and would like to believe - that a lot of exterior paintwork was dark green to mimic the verdigrised copper of the gentry.
That's enough for a Tuesday morning.

I like it as it it too! Am back in blogland again and have missed your blog, it always cheered me up!
I would leave it and wax it. I love plain wood and it gains so much character after a few years. But - it is YOUR door. :)
Leave it the way it is, please. Unless it would look so out of place that you couldn't bear it. I always prefer nice wood left alone. But I know you'll read all of these comments and then do what you want anyway! And that's the way it should be.
