The back yard once looked like this. The outside lavatory and coal house had already been demolished by the Lovely Son. The yard was levelled, a sturdy back fence built, and the walls rendered. They were painted the colour of an English sky, neither blue nor grey.
Some basics started to appear, haphazardly, and with no budget or know-how, but it was Better. Or, as Manuel from the Dominican Republic, who rendered the walls, would say, "more bedder".
