wet, whinge, woe is us

This heavy rain is supposed to last all day, and certainly went on all night, hammering on the roof and making me dream awful dreams, of leaks in all the rooms (including several that don't actually exist in this house), of water dripping onto my bed, and giving me the most intense headache on waking. But the roof held, despite its pressing need for the overhaul planned for August.

The wind is driving the rain horizontally now. It's cold and bleak, and despite a sweater, I have had to put the heating on, just for a guilt-laden hour, you understand. More than ever, I yearn for a wood-burning stove, that most comforting of all sources of domestic warmth.

The rain-hating dog is beside me, tightly curled in that particular position that denotes misery; bored cats wander miserably from cat flap to front window - yes, the weather is awful at both sides of the house - and I have to go out shortly, to shop in Sainsbury's, the supermarket that specialises in the iciest aisles ever. People preparing for Arctic exploration shop there in order to acclimatise to extreme cold. The car park is full of deep pools of water, so you enter with wet feet, and the trolleys drip, so that small icicles might form before you've finished in the dairy aisle.

My sister emails me from her Greek island; the heatwave continues; she is having a wonderful time. There's something most unfair going on here.

Pouring rain here, too. That sunny Greek island sounds very enticing right now! K x

Oliver would like Millie to know that he too is an excellent, big time fly hunter and if she would like he could teach her the fine art of "parkouring" - to the loud thumping base of some recent Madonna hit of course (a treat for the dog and other onlookers).

Are you baking up a storm & getting things ready for the arrival of the L Son ?

West Wales = wet. Am 1/4 English, therefore not born with webbed feet which are useful here, summer and winter. Town is no doubt dripping with tourists - coffee shops full etc.
According to a deep trough used as bird bath, we have had 4 - 5 inches of rain in last 10 days. We have had thunder & lightening, garden is soggy in extreme. On a good point, the water butts are full.
What happened to good summer forecast???

I'll join you in the wailing - it's only just stopped here - and I have lit the woodburner.

Exactly 49 days until I get to a Greek island. I am consoling myself with the fact that right now it is probably too hot and full of Italians. As opposed to too wet and full of the Welsh? Really no contest is there?

maybe you should consider a move to ....Greece.... like whatsername... what was that movie>? ..it'll come to me....er..... oh, alright, I'm stumped. But, remember the one where somebody's mother went for a holiday, had a fling, decided to stay there? .... sheeesh.... totally escapes me...AHA!! yes... Shirley Valentine! that's it.

My sis is having hot weather too...but, it is dangerously hot...and already one neighbour had a fire with combusting hay bales..burned down his huge new under construction hay storage barn. They were all up all night watching sparking bales exploding and shooting into the sky. I pray for rain for her area.... I hope yours moves this far and deluges those poor farmers... they'll be out there standing in it... saying big thankyous...

I wish it could more temperate all over..... it's so not fair for some to be soggy and some to be crispy and dry.... where's the middle ground..? .. oh, just a minute...I live on it. Today it is lovely and warm..but there is a slight breeze and some high cloud cover for the sun.... sorry, just had to brag a bit... cuz we are happy not to have -35C in the summer months....

If the Lovely Son weren't on his way I would say it's high time for your sister to trade places with you for a bit, in order to get the balance right.

Great suggestion, lethe! I do have an open invitation to stay with my sister, but commitments to my most favourite visitors keep me here for now. The Lovely Son now, and my oldest school friend next month - let's hope the weather improves!
